Pomp & Circumstance

The day I thought would never come has finally come. Derrick had his kindergarten promotion today and no, I did not even tear up. Now that's a miracle in itself =) Apparently Fillmore School District doesn't call anything besides high school a "graduation" it's all called a promotion. Not me, it's graduation =) Anywho, it wasn't formal or anything, very relaxed and basically his teacher just handed out little awards and their memory books they have been working on all year.

I wanted to make Derrick feel so very special so I stayed up past my bedtime (8pm) and decorated the house with streamers and balloons so that when he came down in the morning he would feel so special.

I went to work for a few hours but Leroy said he was so excited when he came downstairs! He was a little upset I didn't wait and let him decorate, silly child. The events at school started at 11am so the worry wart I am, Danae and I were there in the class at 10:30. Danae hung out with Derrick's class and I helped cut out some stuff for Mrs. Fluke. The kids sang a couple songs for all us parents and then Mrs. Fluke handed out various awards and memory books. Derrick got a very special award, the "Sight Word Wizard" award. When he started kindergarten his teacher said the goal was to finish 6 sight word lists and that would put him at a great start for 1st grade. Well we kinda went past that.....he passed #13 today! He was so proud of himself and was the leader of the class in sight words.

When we got back home it was time for graduation gifts! Derrick is a wiz at doing mazes so we were able to find an entire book of mazes! He's already half way through, but loving every page of it. A couple weeks ago we went to a Hot Wheels show and they had this little rubber duckie dressed up in a cap & gown. Danae wanted to get it for "Brudder"'s graduation gift. The deal was she could get it for him if she kept it a secret from him. Lo and behold she kept the secret for 2 weeks and was so excited to give it to him! She bought it with her own money she earned from doing chores which made it even more special. And what gift giving would be complete without a Monster truck from Daddy?! Leroy gave him a truck he's been wanting for a very long time now, he was so surprised.

I can't believe my baby is going to be a 1st grader now and my other baby will be starting kindergarten next year. They grow way too fast, but it's so much fun to watch them change and become their own little person.
